Buttgenbach Mine – From “Wasteland to Playland”

Posted on December 13, 2022

Article written by Suzi Mingo for American Motorcyclist

Indirectly, you can trace Buttgenbach Campground and Croom’s history back to 1883, when phosphate mining began in Alachua County, and then spread south. About 75 percent of the phosphate used in the United States, mostly to make fertilizer, comes from Florida, even though there are only a few companies left that mine it.

Established in 1973 through the dedicated efforts of The Florida Trail Riders and the Department of Agriculture, Buttgenbach Campground and Croom Motorcycle Area is the only state property in Florida dedicated to the needs of off-highway motorcycle and ATV riders, and a mecca for Florida off-road riders, located in the Withlacoochee State Forest near Brooksville, FL.
